What is a Podcast?

Podcasting is a method of publishing audio broadcasts via the Internet, allowing users to subscribe to a feed of new files (usually MP3s). It became popular in late 2004, largely due to automatic downloading of audio onto portable players or personal computers.

The word "podcasting" is a portmanteau that combines the words "broadcasting" and "iPod." The term can be misleading since neither podcasting nor listening to podcasts requires an iPod or any portable music player. For that reason, various writers have suggested reinterpreting the letters POD to create "backronyms" such as "Personal On-Demand." The term "Radio Me" was coined by Peter Day of the BBC for the same reason.

Podcasting is distinct from other types of online media delivery because of its subscription model, which uses the RSS 2.0 XML (or RDF XML) format to deliver an enclosed file. Podcasting enables independent producers to create self-published, syndicated "radio shows," and gives broadcast radio programs a new distribution method. Listeners may subscribe to feeds using "podcatching" software (a type of aggregator), which periodically checks for and downloads new content automatically. Some podcatching software is also able to synchronize (copy) podcasts to portable music players. Any digital audio player or computer with audio-playing software can play podcasts. The same technique can deliver video files, and by 2005 some aggregators could play video as well as audio.

How does our Podcast work?

Essentially, we plan to update our site each Saturday following our church services. The podcast will normally contain that days sermon. However there may be times that we decide that posting for a worldwide audience may not be useful, such as if the message is more personalized and meant for our local congregation more than the general population. There will also be times where if we get a response from our local congregation that one of our other messages such as a sermonette or split sermon was highly up lifting, we may then decide to post that message as well or instead of the sermon.

Our podcast is completely free and available to anyone on the web. To subscribe to our podcast simply download any aggregator (we recommend iTunes 4.9 and higher or iPodder) and copy the shortcut from the XML image on the left of the screen and paste it into your aggregator's subscription area.
